Which made me think about other silly words, and inspired me to do a little hunt. Here are just 10 words that made me smile tonight.
Kerfuffle
Flibbertigibbet
Discombobulated
Indubitably
Hullabaloo
Guacamole
Mollycoddle
Sprocket
Diphthong
Bamboozle
Now in my wanderings to find these words, I found a post that proclaimed March 31 (2005) as Silly Words Day. I don't know if a similar proclamation was issued in 2006. But what say we go for 2007?
I hereby proclaim that March 31, 2007 is Silly Words Day. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find and post your 3 personal favorite silly words in the English language. You have 10 days to come up with your words.
When you find your words, post them on your blog and send me the link. You don't have to wait until March 31, but on March 31 I'll publish all the links, and ...
ONE LUCKY POSTER will win a $10 Starbucks gift card just for playing! Yes, I love silly words THAT much.

Those are good words, Nancy ! I especially love "kerfuffle" and "discombobulate"...
I think I might have to take up the gauntlet you've thrown down !
Ooh, I hope you do Michele!
I love "kerfuffle".
And my favorite (okay, one of my favorite) Calvin and Hobbes strips is the one in which Hobbes talks about how much he loves the word "smock" and says "smock smock smock smock smock" until Calvin yells, "What on earth is wrong with you!?"
It's hilarious.
I love silly words, too. Here are a few of my favs:
bonnyclabber \BAH-nee-klab-er\ noun : sour milk that has been thickened or curdled
widdershins \WID-er-shinz\ adverb : in a left-handed, wrong, or contrary direction : counterclockwise
razzmatazz \raz-muh-TAZ\ noun *1 : a confusing or colorful often gaudy action or display : razzle-dazzle
slugabed \SLUG-uh-bed\ noun : a person who stays in bed after the usual or proper time to get up
snickersnee \SNIK-er-snee\ noun : a large knife
Apparently I was way too excited to read the fine print about how the contest works. Sorry.
Whimsy -- no problem! I love the words!
Leila, it's funny how some words that don't sound all that strange when you say them once, sound incredibly silly when you say them multiple times. I am giggling over "Smock" now. And I love Calvin and Hobbes too!
"Underpants" has got to be one of the silliest words in the English language to the single-digit age set. I'm posting it here because I shan't include it in my group of three silly words.
persnickety
codswallop
wombat

These seem ordinary at first glance, but go ahead and say them aloud. :)
doldrums
lollipop
bubbly
I found these today, and couldn't resist adding them:
lamborghini
rutabaga
Has anyone said NINCOMPOOP yet? You didn't say it had to be spelled correctly, did you?
When I think of 2 more, I'll come back.
I have some words up at my blog... still thinking about this. Do they have to be "real" words, or would a mispronunciation by a kid work?
Here's my entry. I may ad more as I think of them. Great contest! Reminds me I have to look for my copy of this book: Poplollies & Bellibones. It's filled with silly words that have gone out of popular usage. I use "lubber-wort" quite often though so there is hope for all the book's lost words.
lollygag
nincompoopery
rambunctious
a lot of my favourites are here already but okay:
bolderdash
sesquipedalian
tarradiddle
ginormous
lugubrious
boomerang
shrubbery
I couldn't post these on my blog, because I'm limited to just photos. :D
