Who do you love to hate?

I've been faithfully reading Jen Robinson's Book Page since I discovered it about a week ago. Diving into the archives, and the wonderful links in the sidebar, I found two fantastic lists Jen has put together: Cool Girls and Cool Boys from children's literature. I encourage folks to take a look at these lists and offer more suggestions if you think of other cool boys and cool girls.

Jen's blog also pointed me to two other lists worth checking out: Cool Teachers and Librarians from children's literature.

Okay, so here's my idea for a list: Great Antagonists in Children's Literature. Antagonists can range from the truly evil to the deep-down-not-so-bad, but always they are pitted against our heroes and we inevitably root against them in one way or another.

To save people from any anguish over putting a somewhat sympathetic "bad-guy" into the same list with the likes of Voldemort, I'm splitting this list into two categories. The first few entries for each group are shown below to get it started.

So I ask again, who do you love to hate?

Group 1: Hate Them or Love to Hate Them

Voldemort from the Harry Potter series
Count Olaf from the Series of Unfortunate Events series
Cruella DeVil from 101 Dalmations

Group 2: Love Them Despite Their Misguided Ways

Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series (book 7 to reveal whether he moves to other category)
Nellie Oleson from the Little House series
Aunt March from Little Women
Aunt Miranda from Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

Don't forget to add your thoughts in the comments!

Jen Robinson sent following in an email:

Category 1:

The Witch from The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis

The Lone Power from The Young Wizards series by Diane Duane

Captain Bartholome from Pirates! by Celia Rees

Arise Fell (the Puritan preacher) from I, Coriander by Sally Gardner

The Supreme Custodian from Magyk by Angie Sage

The Warden from Holes by Louis Sachar

Saint Dane from the Pendragon series by D. J. MacHale

Miss Trunchbull from Matilda by Roald Dahl

Category 2:

Luke from The Lightning Thief and Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan

Mrs. Coulter from the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman

Miss Minchin from The Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Mrs. Tifton from The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall

And ooh, Jen, Mrs. Trunchbull -- I was trying to remember her name earlier!

Jen, I'm now allowing comments from non-blogspot people. Sorry you couldn't post this yourself earlier! Ack! Still learning.

Thanks so much! The funny thing is that you had just convinced me to go and set up a blogger account finally. But I really appreciate your listing my suggestions here. And I do think that you'll get more comments if you allow the anonymous commenters (or at least "other") - I really haven't had any problem with that so far, myself. Thanks! -- Jen

I second Mrs. Coulter, though I'd put her in the first category for the first two books and the second for the third.

Miss Slighcarp, from Wolves of Willoughby Chase (1)

Captain Jaggerty, from The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle (1)

Thaddeus Valentine, from Mortal Engines (I'd put him in the first category, but others might argue)

That's it for now, but I'm sure I'll think of more!

Greg Pincus said...

What category does The Grinch fall into? he's ultimately the main character/hero. Hmmm.

I'm not so good with categorization, so here's two others to put where you'd like:

Mrs. Granger in Frindle

The Other Mother in Coraline

Becky said...

Nifty idea!

Farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean from Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl (1)
Templeton the Rat in Charlotte's Web (2)
Mr. Standish the mean schoolmaster in The Great Brain by John D. Fitzgerald (1); I think he was in the original book and not in any of the sequels
Rachel Lynde in Anne of Green Gables (2), though by the end of the series she's almost likeable
Captain Hook from Peter Pan (1)

Hmmm, will have to think some more...

Mary Lee said...

Here are a few:

Sister Basil in THE LOUD SILENCE OF FRANCINE GREEN
Capricorn in INHEART
the Sinisteeds in GOSSAMER
Mr. Wilson, the mill overseer in COUNTING ON GRACE by Elizabeth Winthrop

I'll have more once I'm back in my classroom and can look at my bookshelves!

What a great idea!!!

Group 1, Mr. and Mrs. Twit from Roald Dahl's book, The Twits.

My votes are for:

Mrs. Coulter--for her evil and complex nature (esp. in #3) (His Dark Materials)

Miss Michum (sp?)--"The Little Princess"

P.S. Posting about your contest now :)

This contest is SO very fun - and you are now linked to our site! I found you via Jen Robinson!
================================
Category 1 - Love to Hate 'em:

And, I second The Lone Power, Arise Fell and Miss Trunchbull.

Category 2 - Loved Despite Themselves:
Marak, from The Hollow Kingdom, by Clare B. Dunkle. Gentle and ironic ...and totally villianous.

Great Aunt Maria, from Swallowdale and The Picts and the Martyrs (2nd and 11th books in the Swallows & Amazons series, by Arthur Ransome)

Nancy said...

Thanks rm1! I've moved all the suggestions into the post list, to make it easier for people to check their entries. Yours was not already in, so I've added it.

I am going to stop now, or I'll be here for days. Feel free to email me or post to me and I'll add more!

Nancy said...

Thanks LW!

I'm also adding:

Every thief, kidnapper or general bad guy from the Nancy Drew series

Every thief, kidnapper or general bad guy from the Trixie Belden series

(folks should feel free to suggest others -- these are the two series I'm most familiar with)

The Murray aunts and uncles in the Emily of New Moon series

(I was going to list the Sterlings from The Blue Castle, but Wikipedia says it's L.M. Montgomery's only work of "adult" fiction, so I will leave it out)

Aunt Polly from Pollyanna

Grace Windsor Wexler from The Westing Game

Little Willow said...

You are welcome!

The Westing Game is fantastic. You might add Angela too...

Mrs. Gorf from Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar

Cokie from The Baby-Sitters Club

In the "every thief, kidnapper or general bad guy from the (blank) series" category:
Hardy Boys
Meg
Cherry Ames
The Baby-Sitters Club Mysteries
The American Girl Mysteries
The Bobbsey Twins
Body of Evidence

Erin said...

A Series of Unfortunate Events - Count Olaf's accomplices

Little Willow said...

Sick of me yet? :)

The Fairy Rebel: The Fairy Queen
The Book of Dead Days: Valerian
May Bird and the Ever After: The Bogie Man
May Bird and the Ever After: Bo Cleevil
The Guardian of Time trilogy: The Order
Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism: Miss Adderstone
Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism and Molly Moon Stops the World: Primo Cell
Molly Moon's Hypnotic Time Travel Adventure: The Maharaja
A Bad Boy Can Be Good For A Girl: The unnamed bad boy
The Midnighters trilogy: The darklings
Devilish: Lanalee
Secrets of Dripping Fang: The Onts
The Sleeper Conspiracy: Tyler Garrett
Boy Heaven: Kristy (except that saying this is a spoiler in itself, like us discussing Angela from The Westing Game earlier)
Playing in Traffic: Skye
Amandine: Amandine
Acceleration: Initially anonymous murderer
Such a Good Girl: Her father
Dream Spinner: The old man
The Orphan Prince: The Black Wolf
OutCast: (aka Cassandra's grandfather)

Various spies, double agents, shapeshifters, and other types of bad guys working together or as independent evils:
The Sleeper Conspiracy (one story split into two books)
The Uglies trilogy (especially the adult Specials)
Jennifer Scales series

Mystery/action-adventure series that employ different villains in every book:
Goosebumps
Fear Street
Chet Gecko
Encyclopedia Brown
Two-Minute Mysteries

Now I am thinking of the popular YA horror novels from the 70s through 90s. There were many spooky or suspenseful releases by R.L. Stine, Christopher Pike, Diane Hoh, Richie Tankersley Cusick, John Bellairs, Zilpha Keatley Snyder, Caroline B. Cooney, Joan Lowery Nixon, and Lois Duncan that had murderers, evil ghosts, and other bad guys and gals.

Did you want any anti-heroes and/or those that are from the POV of the villain (or those suspected/accused, a la Inexcusable by Lynch, or I am Morgan le Fay by Springer)? That would be another list altogether!

Little Willow said...

Classics, fairy tales and folktales:
The Tale of Bluebeard: Bluebeard
Beowulf: Grendel
Beowulf: Grendel's Mother
The Goose Girl: Curdken
Snow-White and Rose-Red: The dwarf
The NeverEnding Story: Xayide
The NeverEnding Story: Ygramul

Medusa (Greek)
Scylla (Greek)
Charybdis (Greek)
Circe (Greek)
Sirens (Greek)
Calypso (Greek)
Charon (Greek)
Ares (Greek)
Loki (Norse)

Contemporary series:
Animorphs
Keys to the Kingdom: Each book has its own day-of-the-week villain who/which is also the title of the book (example: Mister Monday, Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wednesday, Sir Thursday) with his or her own Dusk, Dawn, and Noon, plus additional minions

More from Harry Potter:
Aragog
Lucius Malfoy
The Basilisk
Fluffy

More from His Dark Materials:
The Authority
Father Luis Gomez
Lord Carlo Boreal
Regent Metatron
Mrs. Coulter's unnamed golden monkey

Also, I see the Queen of Hearts from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland listed, but not the Red Queen from Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. You may or may not count her as the same character.

Nancy said...

Wow, you have been BUSY!

I hadn't included the Red Queen because I never read Through the Looking Glass (shame on me). Adding the lovely lady now.

I left out Beowulf and Animal Farm for now. Not sure about including them as children's lit, even in a YA category. Feel free to resuggest them though, as I've read neither (yeah yeah, shame again).

Thanks for all these great entries! The list is at 192 now!

Whoo hoo!

OOh, 193, because I'm adding Katar from Princess Academy. I read about half the book late last night, and Katar annoys me very much, so she goes on the list!

Anonymous said...

The lord of the rings: The wizard Saruman

Anonymous said...

The Hobbit: The Spiders
The Lord of the Rings: The evil sorcerer Sauron

Nancy said...

I am adding:

Mrs. Driver from The Borrowers
Human Beans from The Borrowers series

Little Willow said...

You are welcome!

Through the Looking Glass is fantastic. Please read it when you have the opportunity to do so.

I stopped short of putting 1984: Big Brother and so on. :) Beowulf and Animal Farm have been on middle school reading lists. Beowulf has some YA unabridged imprints; Animal Farm is typically only shelved in adult fic/lit.

More suggestions:

Single villains
Oh My Goth: Jade
Among the Walnuts: The Uncles
Coraline: The Other Mother
Poison: Alethar, Lord of Phaerie
The Haunting Of Alaizabel Cray: The Wych-Kin
